A Story of 2x1m Flat, Shrimps I Didn't Like and Kung Fu: From Hong Kong to Hung Gar Kung Fu Online

When I first arrived in Hong Kong, I had no idea that shrimp would play a part in my Hung Gar journey.

I was there to train — full focus, no distractions. My sifu, Raymond Wong, had welcomed me into his school with the kind of warmth and quiet pride that traditional masters often carry. One day, after training, he brought out a huge plate of shrimp, and while the others took a few, he told them to leave the rest for me — "She likes them," he said. "She deserves them."

The truth? I didn’t like shrimp. But I also didn’t want to offend my teacher. So I smiled and ate. Every last one.

Over time, after many polite servings, I learned to like them. And I think that story captures something essential about my time in Hong Kong: things weren’t always comfortable, but they changed me.

From a Two-Meter Room to World Championships

Hong Kong was not easy. I lived in a tiny room — two meters by one, sharing space with cockroaches, noise, and the strange loneliness of being far from home. But I was also exactly where I needed to be. I had been training martial arts since 1999, but Hung Gar Kung Fu pulled me into a different kind of discipline. The roots of this style are deep, and I had to work hard to even begin to understand it.

From Hong Kong to Kung Fu Online

Hung Gar is known for its powerful stances, strong hands, and structure rooted in Southern Chinese traditions. There’s a gravity to the style — in the way you move, the way you breathe, and the way you learn to be patient. I trained day after day, often under the watchful eyes of people who had grown up in this system, with expectations that were never spoken but always felt.

In the years that followed, I competed at the highest level, eventually becoming a world champion in traditional Wushu. But titles are not the reason I teach today. What matters more to me is the way Kung Fu reshaped me — how it demanded discipline, focus, and humility.

And now, I bring that same philosophy into my Hung Gar Kung Fu Online program.

Bringing Hung Gar Kung Fu Online

When people hear “online Kung Fu,” they often imagine just some videos and a login. But my approach is different. I don’t believe in simply copying movements from a screen with no guidance, no feedback, no structure. That’s not how real Kung Fu is learned — and it’s not how I teach.

The question I often get is: Can you really learn something like Hung Gar online? And the answer is yes — if it's taught right.

I work closely with my students through video analysis, messages, calls, and personalized corrections. Even if you’re a complete beginner, you don’t need to figure it out alone. I explain how to stand, how to breathe, how to shift your weight — everything I would do if we were face to face. You can send me your training videos, and I mark them up, send back voice or video notes, and adjust your plan based on how you're progressing.

Hung Gar is about structure — and that structure can be translated to modern tools. You’re not just getting content. You’re building a relationship with a coach, one who understands how this art works and how to adapt it to your body, your level, and your lifestyle.

What I’ve found is that some students actually learn better online. They can train at their own pace, revisit lessons, and focus without distractions. They don’t feel like they have to “keep up” with anyone. It’s about their own rhythm. Their own journey.

Of course, it’s not the same as standing in a noisy Hong Kong courtyard in the humidity of June, swatting away mosquitoes between horse stances. But it’s real. It’s deep. And it works.

Want to Try Hung Gar Online?

If you're curious about Hung Gar Kung Fu and wondering whether you could train it online — yes, you can. Whether you're new or experienced, whether you have a martial arts background or you're just starting, there's a path for you.

And if you're not sure where to begin, just message me. I’ll walk you through what training can look like, and we’ll figure out what makes sense for you.

Because Kung Fu doesn’t just belong in temples or old movies. It belongs in the here and now — and it might belong in your life, too.
