Can You Learn Hung Gar Kung Fu Online? A Coach's Honest Answer

Many people discover Hung Gar Kung Fu, become fascinated by its powerful stances, traditional training methods, and rich history, and then run into the same problem:

  • There isn't a good school nearby.

  • Or the schedule doesn't fit their life.

  • Or they've trained elsewhere and never quite found the instruction, structure, or community they were looking for.

This naturally leads to the question:

Can you actually learn Hung Gar Kung Fu online?

The short answer is yes.

The longer answer is that it depends on how you approach it.

The Problem With Most Online Martial Arts Training

When people think of online martial arts training, they often imagine watching videos alone and trying to copy movements.

While that can be useful, it has limitations. Without feedback, it's easy to:

  • misunderstand body mechanics

  • develop bad habits

  • miss important details

  • lose motivation over time

This is why so many online courses end up unfinished. The issue isn't online learning. The issue is the lack of coaching.

In my experience, one minute of personalized feedback is often worth more than an hour of watching instructional videos.

Why I Teach Hung Gar Online

I didn't start teaching online because it was trendy.

I started because I repeatedly met people who wanted to learn traditional martial arts but didn't have access to quality instruction.

Over the last decade, I've trained and taught martial arts, fought professionally in MMA, completed a PhD, and spent years studying how people learn complex skills.

As someone who has balanced professional fighting, academic work, coaching, and everyday life, I've become increasingly interested in helping people build sustainable training habits rather than chasing perfect ones.

What I've found is that most adults don't need more information.

They need structure, feedback, and guidance.

That's what I aim to provide through Kung Fu Scholars.

What Makes Hung Gar Well-Suited to Online Learning?

Hung Gar is known for developing strong foundations.

A large part of that foundation comes from:

  • stance work

  • body structure

  • balance

  • coordination

  • power generation

  • mobility

These qualities can be observed and improved remarkably well through video feedback. In many cases, I can spot details in a student's stance or movement more easily from a recorded video than during a busy group class.

Common Myths About Learning Hung Gar Online

"I need a training partner."

While it is better to have a partner, and if you train to fight, it's unnecessary; for any other goal, there are still many ways to ensure that you are learning correctly: already mentioned personal feedback, live call corrections, using various tools to correct your angles, planes of movement, and applications (cones, bands, etc).

"I'm too old to start."

Many of my students are adults returning to martial arts after years away from training; currently, the oldest one is in his 70s.

"I need to train every day."

Not at all.

Consistency matters more than volume. Many students make excellent progress training just one or two times per week.

A Typical Student

Most of my students are adults balancing martial arts with careers, families, and other responsibilities. A typical student might have trained martial arts years ago, taken a long break, and now wants to return to practice in a way that fits real life.

They don't want another collection of videos.

They want guidance, feedback, and a clear path forward.

Others are completely new to martial arts, always felt intrigued, but never tried. And now, finally, the time is here to fulfill a dream.

And then there are those who aren't that much into fighting or martial arts, but want to move and stay healthy, using a functional movement system.

If that sounds familiar, you're not alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long are the training sessions?

Most sessions take between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on how deeply you want to explore the material.

Do I need previous martial arts experience?

No. Complete beginners are welcome.

Can I train if I'm not fit?

Absolutely. The program is designed to help you gradually improve strength, mobility, and conditioning.

Do I receive personal feedback?

Yes. Coaching students submit training videos and receive individualized feedback.

What if I only have time to train once per week?

That's completely fine. Many students train one or two times per week and make steady progress over time.

So, Can You Learn Hung Gar Online?

Yes—provided you're learning through a structured system that includes coaching and feedback, not just a collection of videos.

At some point, every martial artist reaches the same crossroads:

Continue researching, or start training.

If you're curious about Hung Gar Kung Fu and wondering whether online coaching could work for you, the best answer comes from experience, not theory.

That's exactly why I created the 7-Day Coaching Trial: to let people experience real coaching, real feedback, and a structured approach to Hung Gar before making any long-term commitment.
