Kung Fu Online Course vs Online Coaching: What You Need to Know Before You Choose

Lately, I’ve been talking to a lot of people interested in improving their Kung Fu or fitness online. What I keep noticing is a big confusion around kung fu online courses versus online coaching — and I want to clear that up before anyone gets surprised or disappointed.
In the fitness world, online coaching has been common for a while, but in Kung Fu and martial arts, not so much. Many online courses out there look great on the surface — fancy videos, promises of results — but when you dig deeper, they often offer little to no interaction or personal support. It’s like buying a DVD and hoping that alone will make you better. Spoiler: it usually doesn’t. What is more, try to make a conversation with that DVD!
If you are confused with course VS coaching, this might help!
1. One-Way vs Two-Way Interaction
Online courses usually consist of pre-recorded videos or tutorials. You watch the content, try to follow along, and hope it fits your needs. It’s like being handed a book (or that DVD) — you can read it anytime, but there’s no one to ask if you get stuck or have questions.
Online coaching, on the other hand, is a conversation. You’re connected with a real coach — like me — who supports you throughout your journey. You can ask questions, get feedback, and adjust your training based on your progress or any issues that come up.
2. One Area or Holistic
Courses often cover one specific area — maybe just the basics of Kung Fu forms or strength exercises. To get more, you usually have to buy separate courses or an upgrade.
With coaching, everything is integrated and tailored to you. If you have back pain one week, you don’t have to guess what to do — you message your coach and get a personalized modification or exercises designed specifically for you.
Coaching is also often more holistic. For example I offer also strength training, mobility, and mental training.
3. Progress Tracking and Accountability
A course might have videos, but often no way to measure how much you’ve improved or keep you accountable.
In coaching, progress tracking is key. Your coach monitors your development, adjusts your plan as you improve, and keeps you motivated by celebrating wins and helping you through challenges.
4. Corrections
As you can guess, the only way of getting corrections in an online course is usually comparing yourself to the video/photo. In a coaching service, there are ways of giving feedback and corrections: submitting a video of yourself and getting video feedback, I like use visual markups too. And of course, live calls.
Which One Is For You?
Choosing coaching means investing in a human touch — a coach who understands your unique journey and adapts your training accordingly. It’s interactive, flexible, and much more than just watching videos.
If you want a training experience where you’re not alone, where you get continuous support and personalized advice, online coaching might be exactly what you need.
