Kung Fu and Tech: How Video Analysis Changed My Coaching Forever

If you’ve ever tried to fix your form in front of a mirror, you know it’s almost impossible to catch every detail. Your brain lies to you — it fills in gaps and convinces you you’re straight when you’re twisted, or that your stance is low enough when it’s really not. Enter video analysis: my favorite tech “superpower” for both my training and coaching.
When I first started recording myself, it was uncomfortable. I saw all my flaws: the dropped shoulder, the uneven stance, the lack of hip rotation. But instead of discouraging me, it motivated me. I could finally see the truth — and start correcting it with intention.
In my online coaching, I ask students to send me videos regularly. I don’t just watch them passively; I slow them down, draw over them, mark angles, and record feedback so students can see exactly what to adjust. The “aha!” moments are incredible. Suddenly, students understand what “turn your hip” or “relax your shoulders” really means.
Video also allows for tracking progress over time. We keep archives, so students can look back at day one and see how far they’ve come — a huge motivator that keeps them consistent and excited.
Some people think online coaching is a compromise. But with tools like video analysis, it often becomes an upgrade: more detail, more personal attention, and more opportunity for reflection. Students learn to become their own observers, developing an eye for detail that will stay with them for life.
So don’t be afraid of the camera. Embrace it as your silent, honest training partner. It doesn’t judge you — it shows you. And once you see yourself clearly, there’s no limit to how far you can go.
