Pursuing my love for Kung Fu, I relocated to Hong Kong eight years ago to further my studies and earn a Ph.D. in Sports Psychology. In 2022, I moved to Thailand to train professionally in MMA.

MY JOURNEY
I started training in martial arts in 1999. I spent my childhood in a dojo, training in traditional karate. After I reached the 1st-degree black belt, I also added Chinese kung fu which then took over my life.
In 2015 I board a plane to Hong Kong with my backpack, scared to death. In the years before I visited Hong Kong, the center of Southern Chinese martial arts to compete. But now I decided to move here to study directly from one of the best practitioners of the Hung Kuen style, Wong Chung Man Sifu. I saw the depth of the knowledge kung fu has in Hong Kong and since my love for martial arts drew all my main life decisions, I thought: either I stop training, or I move over there. And so I did.
The first years were pure survival. I started working at learning centers because even though I had two degrees in Education, I could not land a job at a school. Those were terrible jobs and I knew they would be, but they were my ticket to Hong Kong. So I worked in a tiny overcrowded room without windows. My first few flats were small too: I could easily touch opposite walls at the same time. My first flat: no kitchen, so my flatmates used to cook in the bathroom. Cocraches loved that.
As time was passing by, I kept applying to the Doctoral program and eventually got it. I got to research martial arts from a psychological point of view. All those years I was training daily, competing and winning the Hong Kong national titles, vice European titles, and a World Championship title.
My gyms were a public park and my sifu's school, filled with lion heads and weapons. Around that time I started to spar at boxing gyms, sanda gyms, and eventually MMA gyms. Thanks to a crazy idea, I flew to Thailand to spend a week training there and I met George and Frank Hickman, who changed my opinion on MMA. I kept coming back as often as I could, and from a crosstraining opportunity, it became a full-time career dream. When Covid hit, gyms in Hong Kong were often closed and so I kept training in the parks like I used to. Finally, in 2022 stars aligned and I had a short window opportunity to move from Hong Kong to Thailand. Within a month I left my kung fu home, packed my things and my dog, I flew to Phuket. So here I am in Thailand, training full time striking, wrestling, BJJ, and fighting as often as I can with the best people in my corner. I am truly blessed.

MMA, or mixed martial arts, is a full-contact combat sport, where you can strike, wrestle or submit your opponent.
Typical training consists of many different aspects such as striking, wrestling, BJJ, and conditioning.
I believe the fight is one of the most primal experiences you can have. For me, it was MMA where I felt the most at home.
I train and coach a southern Chinese style of kung fu called Hung Gar/Hung Kuen, and my sifu is Wong Chung Man. Kung fu (or traditional wushu) is a Chinese martial art. Besides Hung Gar, there are many different families of styles. Our stances are firm and strong, there are 5 animals and 5 elements present in the mindset as well as in the techniques, and we have a whole arsenal of weapons. There is no acrobatics of jumping as one could see in modern wushu, instead, the practical usage/self-defense and health aspect are significant. Traditional martial arts have been always my love. I traveled the world for them, I moved alone to the other side of the planet, and I paid a high price for learning. I am blessed I could train several of them in my life, first Shotokan Karate and then Hung Kuen Kung Fu, with some small experience with Northern Shaolin, Praying Mantis, etc. I love to explore their depth and I truly am fascinated by their wisdom. The fact that many traditional martial arts are not usable today is not the problem of the arts, but of the people who train them. That is what brought me to MMA, to bring fighting back to traditional styles. I am honored I was able to take an apprentice oath in the form of a Bai Si (Bai Shi) ceremony. This is a ritual where the student kneels down in front of the teacher, passes them a cup of tea, and promises loyalty till death. This oath goes both ways. Some talk about it as an adoption to the master's family and indeed my sifu Wong Chung Man told me "Now I have a daughter". The lineage is important in kung fu. You cannot just learn from different coaches whenever you like, but there are rules you won't find in any modern combat sports. A lineage, a kung fu family, carries specifications of how certain techniques are practiced and identifies the relationships among practitioners based on their lineages and their place in them. These are firm and won't change per life. Every Sunday at Kung Fu Corner back in Hong Kong, which is an event of performances of various schools, I could meet my "uncles" from other styles and lineages. We could not speak the same language, but after the years I built a reputation as my sifu's student, a female foreigner living in Hong Kong, and however life was hard, they always made me feel like I am just their niece. My lineage is: Wong Fei Hung > Lam Sai Wing > Lam Jo > Wong Lei > Leung Kam Kwong > Wong Chung Man > Veronika Partikova
